What to Expect in a Horse Riding Lesson at Legacy International Dressage

A typical day at Legacy International Dressage begins with students arriving at the barn 30 minutes prior to their scheduled lesson. This allows ample time for preparation and ensures that both horse and rider are ready for an effective session. In instances where riders are new to horses, your instructor will help you groom and tack your horse until you are able to do it on your own.

Horse Preparation

Upon arrival, students will:

  • Retrieve Their Horse: Each student will either bring their personal horse or a barn-selected horse for the lesson.

  • Assess Grooming Needs: Students should evaluate whether their horse requires grooming or a bath. During warmer weather, most horses will likely need a bath before the lesson.

  • Grooming and Tacking: After grooming, students will gather the necessary tack and begin tacking up their horse. Before bridling, it’s essential to check with the instructor to confirm that everything is in order.

Instruction Time

Students can expect 45 to 60 minutes of personalized instruction during their lesson. This time includes:

  • Warm-Up: Preparing the horse and rider for the lesson.

  • Main Instruction: Focused riding practice based on individual goals and skill levels.

  • Cool Down: Allowing the horse and rider to relax post-ride.

Post-Lesson Responsibilities

After riding, students are responsible for:

  • Removing Tack: Carefully taking off all tack while ensuring no saddle or bridle marks remain on the horse.

  • Cooling and Grooming: Cooling down the horse and grooming it thoroughly.

  • Returning the Horse: Leading the horse back to its pasture or stall.

  • Cleaning Up: Tidying the aisleway and/or wash stall, followed by cleaning tack before storing it properly.

Learning About Horse Care

Legacy International Dressage emphasizes the importance of understanding horse care. Students, especially beginners, are encouraged to learn proper techniques for handling and caring for horses before and after each lesson.

Lesson Structure

Each lesson slot is structured as follows:

  • 30 Minutes: Time allocated for tacking up.

  • 45-60 Minutes: Actual ride time.

  • 30 Minutes: Cool down and clean-up period.

Students are expected to uphold high standards of care and respect for both the horses and the equipment used in lessons.

Flexibility in Scheduling

While individual lessons are typically planned, students should be prepared for instances where two riders may share arena space due to other boarders or training activities at Legacy International Dressage. Flexibility is appreciated as schedules may adapt based on availability.

By following these guidelines, students can maximize their learning experience at Legacy International Dressage while fostering a respectful and caring environment for both horses and fellow riders.
